Charlie (FA) MortonSP | Astros

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Rays have had discussions with free agent right-hander Charlie Morton.December 06, 2018 | 03:12 PM

The Rays have reportedly been interested in making a big move, with reports Thursday that they made an offer for Paul Goldschmidt before he was dealt to the Cardinals. Morton isn't the star that Goldschmidt it -- few are -- but he is a strong starter who had an excellent 201/64 K/BB ratio over 167 innings and 3.13 ERA for the Astros last year. He turned 35 in November, so it's likely Morton will get a decent salary, but on a short-term deal. We'll see if the Rays are willing to pay the necessary cash to acquire such a player.
