Paxton (back) working on increasing spin rateMay 23, 2020 | 12:00 AM
James Paxton (back) told YES Network's Meredith Marakovits this week that he's been working on increasing the spin rate with his pitches.
Analysis: Paxton required a microscopic lumbar discectomy on February 5, but he's pretty much back to normal at this point, estimating that he's throwing about 12-14 bullpen sessions. He expects to be ready to go whenever the season begins. However, the shutdown has allowed him to experiment. Working in Wisconsin, he's been using a ball which tracks spin rate and he's noticed more spin and back spin when throwing his fastball with the help of a new grip which features less contact with his thumb. The question is whether he'll feel comfortable doing it in games or resort to his old habits. Paxton, 31, is due to become a free agent following the 2020 season.
