James van Riemsdyk struggled in 2020 playoffsSeptember 16, 2020 | 05:24 AM
James van Riemsdyk's role in the Flyers' 2020 playoff run was minimal.
Analysis: van Riemsdyk was scratched in four postseason games and when he did play, he averaged 14:20 minutes. He ended up scoring two goals and registered no assists in 12 playoff games. That's obviously far from what you'd hope for out of a player with a $7 million cap hit. "Everything is performance-based; it's the player's performance but it's also the other players' performance, who's playing well and what you feel gives your lineup the best chance to win," Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault said. "I think JVR, for him to be effective in the game, he's got to play in that top-nine category." Vigneault felt consistency was an issue for van Riemsdyk this year, but he also believes that he can bounce back and he praised van Riemsdyk's high hockey IQ. At the very least, van Riemsdyk should get an opportunity to re-establish himself with the Flyers in 2020-21.
